Pet Safety Tips in the Cooler Months

veterinary-Care

The cooler months can be some of the prettiest times of the year with the crisp air and the changing colors of the leaves. As the weather starts to get cooler, we need to make sure our little furry friends are warm and comfortable as well. Here are a few safety tips to keep our pets safe in the cooler months:

  • Make sure your pet is warm: Different breeds of pets can tolerate different levels of cold weather. Make sure you know your pet’s tolerance! If the weather is cold outside, avoid placing your pet outside for extended periods of time or taking them on really long walks. Also, try slipping on a pair of boots and a sweater so they can stay warm. If your pet isn’t used to wearing boots, then it’s best to introduce boots to them slowly.

  • Be careful with holiday treats: The holiday season is one of the best times of the year, and with the holidays comes a great host of treats! If you’re looking to give your pet some holiday treats, check with your local vet on what is safe for your pet and what is not. In general, you want to avoid any chocolates, candies, foods with seasoning, onions, and garlic. But turkey and pumpkin make great pet-friendly snacks!

  • Watch out for rodenticides and cold weather poisons: During cold weather seasons, many rodents like to come inside the house to stay warm, which results in quite a few rodent traps and poisons in the neighborhood. Be careful what your pet is sniffing or puts in their mouth because you surely don’t want it to be anything dangerous!

  • Steer clear of wildlife: In the cooler months, the wildlife stays warm by burrowing themselves up in holes underground. Keep your pet away from holes in the ground, because you don’t want any snakes or other creatures jumping out and harming your pet.
