The feline leukemia virus is a deadly virus that kills up to 85% of persistently infected cats within three years of diagnosis. The virus is highly contagious among cats and spreads primarily through the saliva, nasal secretions, urine, feces, and milk of infected cats. The virus can live on the surface of an object for a few hours and can spread by sharing the same grooming supplies, water bowl, or other objects between cats. Cats that spend time outdoors or around other cats are much more at risk of contracting the virus.

Although it’s not considered a core vaccine, you can get guidance from your vet on whether it makes sense for your cat to get the vaccine.
