4 Essential Tips When Taking Care of Your Pet Fish

There are very few things that are more beautiful than watching fish gracefully swim through water. If you’re the proud owner of pet fish then congratulations! Here are a few essential tips to know to ensure your fish live a happy and healthy life:

  • Segregation of Fish: If you own multiple fish, then it is important to know which fish can be in the same tank together and which fish need to be separated. Some general rules to consider are:

    • Don’t put two fish together if one is small enough to fit in the other’s mouth
    • Don’t put fish that look alike together in the same tank. The less alike two types of fish are, the more peacefully they can live together
    • Don’t put aggressive fish in a tank with other fish

  • Tank Cleaning: There are a lot of factors to consider when cleaning a fish tank, such as whether you have a cold water tank or heated tropical tank, whether the tank is freshwater or saltwater, the type of lighting you’re using, the filtration that is in place, and the size of the tank. Generally speaking, you want to change 10-15% of the water each week. Fish are very sensitive creatures, so changing too much water at once can stress them. Doing a little bit of cleaning on a daily basis is a great way to keep the tank clean for your fish.

  • Appropriate Sized Tank: You want to make sure your fish have room to swim around. A good rule of thumb is to use 1 gallon of water per inch of fish. Making sure you get the appropriate tank size is a critical element in taking care of your fish. The tank size will allow your fish to roam around. Keep in mind, however, that larger tank sizes will require more maintenance.

  • Fish Nutrition and Diet: There are many food options for fish at the pet stores. Before you purchase one, consider if your fish are carnivores or herbivores. It’s best to check with your local veterinarian before deciding which food to go with. Some of the different food options include:

    • Dry food such as flakes, granules, and pellets
    • Frozen food such as shrimp, plankton, prawn, krill, or mussels
    • Live food such as shrimp, feeder fish (for larger fish), crickets, and worms
    • Greens such as lettuce, cucumber, zucchini, and cucumber
